Sad
I have drawn so much Sad over the years that this week I decided to look through my sketchbooks and drawings to see how I have approached this feeling before. I have picked out a handful to share. Sad, for me, comes out as water and clouds and tears but then usually evolves into something more abstract. I wanted to share a couple of different examples to illustrate how varied our approach can be. Sometimes even writing something out can help. Some days, Sad is a big heavy blob. Or watery paint. If you are having trouble connecting to Sad, try using a particular medium. I used to use dark blue ink for a while, it was messy and felt exactly like my mood. That helped me to get into it. These days, I vary my technique. If the feeling is very strong, I use watercolor to quickly put it on paper. If the feeling is bordering on Anxious, Sad’s best friend, I use text to try and write it out a bit. No matter what I choose, it all works, even if you draw page after page of tears. It’s not about making it better, but about recognising that feelings are not always The Truth of Ourselves. They are feelings, they come and they go.
This is the Draw Your Feelings Project.
Next Feeling: Angry
Will you join me? This is a year long project, dedicated to connecting to our feelings and ourselves through our art. Send me your drawings, I’d love to see them!
